Farmers’ Group Opposes Transfer of Kalaburagi Research Centre Land
A farmers’ group in Kalaburagi wants to keep 12 acres of land at an agricultural research centre.
The land is proposed for a hospital by the Azim Premji Foundation.
The group says the centre helps farmers by researching tur and other crops.
It says the centre has developed 11 varieties of tur.
Farmers in the area are already facing problems such as drought, floods, changing harvests and low prices, according to the group.
KPRS asked state leaders to stop the land transfer.
It says it would support the hospital being built on different land if the government finds and buys a suitable site.
The Karnataka Pranta Raitha Sangha opposes transferring 12 acres from Kalaburagi’s Agricultural Research Centre for a proposed Azim Premji Foundation hospital.
The group asked Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and district in-charge minister Priyank Kharge to withdraw the proposed transfer.
It says the research centre supports tur growers and has worked on crop research for more than five decades.
The centre has developed and released 11 tur varieties, including TS 3R and GRG-811, according to the representation.
KPRS says it does not oppose the hospital, provided the government identifies and purchases alternative land.
