Mumbai Doctors Identify Two Rare Cancers In Ovarian Tumour
Doctors in Mumbai found two different kinds of cancer inside one ovarian tumour.
The tumour was in a 55-year-old woman who had stomach pain and a lump.
It was very large, measuring about 27 centimetres.
One cancer was a type usually associated with the thyroid, but it developed inside a special ovarian growth called a teratoma.
The other cancer was ovarian clear cell carcinoma.
Blood testing for CA-125 was normal.
Doctors removed the woman’s uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes.
Tests showed that the cancer had not spread to nearby lymph nodes.
The doctors said careful examination under a microscope was needed to identify the rare cancers.

The tumour developed partly within a mature cystic ovarian teratoma in a 55-year-old postmenopausal woman.
The woman had abdominal pain and a palpable lump for about two months, while her CA-125 level was normal.
Doctors removed the uterus, both ovaries and fallopian tubes; examination found no lymph-node spread on CT imaging.
Researchers described the combination as exceptionally rare and stressed the importance of detailed pathological examination.
