Assam Flood Safety: Study Urges Floodplain Zoning and Timely Dam Releases

Imagine a big river in a place called Assam.

Sometimes, when it rains a lot, the river can overflow and flood nearby towns and farms.

There are also big dams built to make electricity, but sometimes these dams have to release a lot of water very quickly.

This extra water can make the floods even worse for people living downstream.

A new study by scientists says that to keep people safe, they need to plan where floods might happen (floodplain zoning) and make sure the dams release water at the right time, not all at once.

They also need to work with other countries, like Bhutan, where some of the rivers start.

The study wants to make better predictions of how much water will flood so people can be warned and move to safety.

They also want to install special tools to measure water flow more accurately.
