Why India celebrates Republic Day while America doesn't
India has two very important national days.
On August 15, 1947, India became free from British rule.
But becoming free did not mean India had its own rules right away.
For nearly three more years, India kept using the old British governing law.
During that time, a group of leaders worked hard to write India's own Constitution.
On January 26, 1950, that new Constitution came into force.
That is the day India became a republic, which means the country is run by its people and their leaders, not by a king.
The date January 26 was picked for a special reason: in 1930, the Indian National Congress had declared that date as Purna Swaraj, or complete independence, Day.
America's story is different.
America declared its independence on July 4, 1776, and later made its Constitution in 1787 and 1789.
Because America's independence and its founding happened close together, Americans just celebrate July 4 as Independence Day and do not have a separate Republic Day.
India became independent from British rule on August 15, 1947, but operated under the Government of India Act, 1935 for nearly three more years.
India formally became a sovereign democratic republic on January 26, 1950, when its new Constitution came into force.
Dr Rajendra Prasad became India's first President when the Constitution took effect in 1950.
January 26 was chosen because the Indian National Congress declared Purna Swaraj (complete independence) Day on that date in 1930.
The United States declared independence on July 4, 1776, adopted its Constitution in 1787, and it came into effect in 1789, so it never needed a separate Republic Day.
Unlike the American path, India's independence and republican founding happened in two separate transitions, giving it two major national days.
