South Korean cargo ship completes test voyage to Europe via Arctic

The South Korean container ship PanStar Acro returned to Busan on October 11 after a test voyage to Europe through the Arctic.

It left Busan on August 22 and travelled along Russia’s Northern Sea Route.

The ship stopped in Felixstowe in the UK, Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Gdansk in Poland before returning by the same route.

The voyage tested whether the Arctic route could be used commercially as melting sea ice makes it more accessible.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said the outward journey took 10 days less than the usual route through the Suez Canal.

The route could offer a faster way to move goods, at a time when conflict in the Middle East is disrupting global shipping.

But more ship traffic could speed up Arctic ice loss, and operators could face risks linked to international sanctions because the route runs along Russia’s northern coast.
