Netinho’s death highlights rising non-Hodgkin lymphoma cases in Brazil

Brazilian singer Netinho died from non-Hodgkin lymphoma on Tuesday, October 13.

The cancer institute Inca forecasts more than 12,000 cases a year in Brazil, affecting men and women.

Cases have risen over the past 25 years, especially among people older than 60.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a blood cancer that begins in lymphocytes, cells involved in the body’s defenses, and can spread through the body.

Netinho’s cancer began in B cells, and his illness led to kidney failure and multiple organ dysfunction.

Early detection can improve the chances of successful treatment, and signs can include night sweats, fever, unexplained weight loss and swollen lymph nodes.

Treatment often uses chemotherapy, sometimes with immunotherapy or radiation.
