Mexico debate links between wider credit access and responsible lending

Credit can help families meet needs and businesses invest, but expanding access also requires safeguards.

At the Crevolution 2026 event in Mexico City on October 7 and 8, finance industry representatives discussed how to make lending more inclusive and responsible.

Mexico’s 2024 National Survey of Financial Inclusion found that 76.5% of people aged 18 to 70 had at least one formal financial product, while 37.3% had formal credit.

The share with formal credit has risen since 2015, but access still differs between men and women.

Participants discussed using alternative data and technology to assess people who lack a traditional credit history and may still be able to repay.

They also stressed protecting personal data, using transparent criteria, preventing illicit finance and avoiding excessive debt.

The goal, as described at the event, is not simply to issue more loans, but to help people use credit sustainably; no specific next steps were stated.
