Milkor says funding is holding back South African military drone purchases
Milkor’s 380 surveillance drone is flying for a Middle East customer, but South Africa’s defence force has not bought one.
Milkor vice-president for Africa Daniel du Plessis said a lack of money is holding back a purchase, rather than a lack of interest.
He spoke after the Africa Aerospace and Defence expo at Air Force Base Waterkloof in South Africa.
The discussion covered how drones, artificial intelligence and data systems are changing warfare, including how people remain in control as drones become more autonomous.
Du Plessis warned that South Africa and the rest of Africa are not ready for cheap attack drones.
He said the local defence industry can respond if governments act now.
Milkor says a lack of funding, rather than a lack of interest, is preventing South Africa’s military from buying its 380 drone.
The South African National Defence Force has not bought the aircraft, although it is flying for a customer in the Middle East.
Milkor vice-president for Africa Daniel du Plessis said the funding shortfall also stands between the drone and the Border Management Authority.
The 380 is a 1.5-tonne surveillance aircraft that can fly for more than 30 hours.
