Nikon Removes First-Place Video From Microscopy Competition Over AI Use

Nikon has removed Ning Xu’s video from first place in its annual Small World in Motion competition.

The video showed airway cilia, tiny hairlike structures, in a child with a rare genetic disorder.

Scientists publicly questioned whether parts of the footage behaved as they should.

Xu said he used AI after the experiment to distinguish and color structures in reconstructed grayscale data, but not to create the movie or the cilia.

Nikon reviewed the video and supporting materials and decided the use of generative AI did not comply with the competition rules.

The new winner is a video of a roundworm and a single-celled microorganism by Vietnamese researcher Nguyen Nam Nhat.

Nikon says it will review its rules and judging procedures for future competitions.
