Study finds female-presenting AI agents were paid less for equal work

Researchers at the University of Limerick in Ireland studied how people judge AI agents at work.

They placed 189 knowledge workers in a virtual office with three assistants that performed the same tasks but had different appearances.

Workers rated the assistants and assigned them pay based on performance.

The human-like male assistant, called Johan, received about 10% more pay on average than the female-presenting assistant, Johanna.

Workers also saw Johan as more human-like, even though the assistants performed equally.

In interviews, most participants said they would treat assistants equally regardless of gender, but few recognized that their own behavior might reflect bias.

The findings suggest that gender bias can shape how people value AI, even when its performance is the same.

The study does not describe any next steps.
