Paraná medical council investigates wrong-knee implant in 72-year-old woman

A 72-year-old woman received a knee implant in the wrong knee at the Red Cross Hospital in Curitiba, in Brazil’s Paraná state.

The Regional Council of Medicine of Paraná has opened an investigation into the doctor involved.

The council says it could revoke the doctor’s licence if an ethics violation is confirmed.

Any decision will depend on how serious the incident was and the doctor’s level of responsibility.

The hospital said it reviewed its care records and procedures after the woman’s family raised the issue.

It also said it followed her care through discharge and is arranging further medical follow-up with an orthopedist from the same clinical team.

Assessment appointments and physiotherapy may be provided if the orthopedist recommends them.
