Trump criticizes Nobel committee after Pillay receives Peace Prize
Donald Trump criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee after it awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay.
Pillay is a South African jurist who has served as a judge and as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Trump listed what he said were his international achievements and argued that he or the United States should have received the prize.
He also dismissed Pillay as someone he had not heard of and criticized the award.
Pillay chaired a United Nations commission that investigated Israel and the Palestinian territories and concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.
The prize announcement was followed by new US sanctions on the International Criminal Court, which has investigated US military actions in Afghanistan and issued arrest warrants for Israeli officials over alleged crimes in Gaza.
The US says the court has no jurisdiction over US citizens because it has not ratified the Rome Statute, and the Trump administration takes the same position for Israel.
