Turkey bars children under 15 from social media under new rules

Turkey has introduced new rules aimed at protecting children on social media.

Children under 15 will not be allowed to use social media platforms.

From November 1, platforms must check users’ ages through e-Devlet without sharing their identity details.

Accounts belonging to users aged 15 to 18 must be private, and they cannot livestream or take screenshots.

Platforms must limit features such as infinite scrolling that encourage people to spend more time online.

They also cannot personalize accounts based on children’s behavior or show them personalized commercial ads.

Platforms must use filters and protective recommendations to address harmful content, and the rules say existing accounts must also undergo age checks.
