Pregnant woman and newborn die after emergency hospital visit in Italy
Greta Astarita, 33, and her newborn son died after she was taken to San Leonardo Hospital in Castellammare di Stabia, southern Italy.
She was seven months pregnant and had gone to the hospital on Friday with severe groin pain.
After examinations, staff reportedly judged that she did not need to be admitted, and she went home.
Her symptoms returned, and she later fainted; she was brought back to hospital in critical condition.
Doctors induced an emergency birth in an attempt to save the baby, who was declared dead on Friday night, and Astarita died the next afternoon.
The Torre Annunziata prosecutor’s office is investigating suspected negligent homicide and has ordered the bodies and medical records seized for autopsies.
