New Fantasy TV Adaptations Point to a Shift Beyond Game of Thrones
For about 15 years, Game of Thrones and its spin-offs have dominated fantasy television.
HBO has no other live-action Game of Thrones TV projects planned at present, though A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to continue and a film and animated projects are in the works.
Meanwhile, several new fantasy adaptations are being developed by other streamers.
Apple TV is tackling Brandon Sanderson’s The Stormlight Archive, while Prime Video has Fourth Wing, God of War and The Dark Tower in the works.
Netflix is developing a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series called Ravenloft, and a Warhammer 40,000 series is also in development.
These projects draw on different books and games, and are expected to bring a wider range of styles than shows that tried to imitate Game of Thrones.
The new adaptations are still in development, so the sources do not say when they will arrive.
