China’s New Tax Measures Add Pressure to the Global Luxury Goods Industry

The global luxury goods industry is facing weaker demand as China tightens tax rules for wealthy people and spending shows signs of slowing in the United States.

China’s measures target people who used offshore trusts to protect assets, requiring them to disclose tax liabilities and pay back taxes by October 22.

Analysts say the 20 percent tax could lead some very wealthy buyers to delay expensive purchases.

Chinese consumers account for about one-fifth of global luxury goods purchases, and their spending has already been affected by a weak economy and a property crisis.

In the United States, credit card data tracked by Citi showed luxury purchases fell for a third straight month in August.

Shares in major European luxury groups have also fallen sharply this year, while some brands have performed better than others.

Investors are awaiting results from major European groups in the coming days, as companies and markets watch for signs of recovery in the second half of the year.
