Michael Penix Jr. hurts ribs in Falcons' loss, hopes to play next week

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. hurt his ribs late in a 30-23 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

He briefly left the game, returned for the end of regulation, but could not play in overtime because of pain.

Backup Tua Tagovailoa played in his place as Baltimore scored a touchdown and Atlanta later threw an interception.

Penix said he believes he will be ready next week, when Atlanta hosts the Chicago Bears.

Coach Kevin Stefanski said the team needs more imaging and tests before setting a return timeline.

Penix missed the first two games of the season, and Atlanta has already used four quarterbacks this year.

The Falcons have had more success moving the ball and scoring with Penix, so his availability could matter as they try to improve their 2-3 record.
