Mental health group warns of protest over services in Sicily

A group representing people with mental health conditions, their families and professionals says Sicily is failing to provide adequate mental health services.

The group raised its concerns at a conference in Caltanissetta, including a shortage of workers and poor facilities.

It says Sicily has 53 mental health workers per 100,000 people, compared with 66 nationally.

The group also says compulsory hospital admissions are more frequent in Sicily than across Italy, and that community housing and supported apartments are not developing as needed.

It blames weak coordination between health and social services, which are overseen by separate regional departments, and says a law needed to support that coordination has not been passed.

The group says about 60 million in health authority funds remain unspent.

It warns it may hold a demonstration outside Palazzo d’Orleans in Palermo if the regional government continues to delay action.
