Ruffini urges Italy’s centre-left to agree on a third leader candidate
Ernesto Maria Ruffini, of the political group Più Uno, spoke at its national assembly in Rome.
He urged Italy’s centre-left parties to agree on what they want to do before choosing a candidate to lead their coalition.
He called for a third candidate, but said that person would not be meaningful without agreement on a programme.
If the parties hold primaries, he said his group would take part and hoped voting would have two rounds and be digital.
Ruffini also criticised an electoral law that he said pushes parties to choose a prime ministerial candidate outside Parliament.
He argued that the law raises concerns about political representation and makes it costly for some groups to collect the signatures needed to stand in elections.
He said he hoped Italy’s Constitutional Court could intervene in time on the signature issue.
Ernesto Maria Ruffini urged Italy’s centre-left parties to agree on what they want to do before choosing a candidate for prime minister.
He said the coalition should seek a third candidate, regardless of whether it holds primaries.
Ruffini said the priority was to present a credible political offer, not simply to find a man or woman for the role.
He said he hoped any primaries would use a two-round system and digital voting.
Speaking at a Più Uno national assembly in Rome, he also criticised the electoral law for weakening parliamentary representation.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
A third candidate does not exist if first we do not agree on what we want to do.
The problem is not finding a man or a woman, but how to present a credible offer.
I hope there will be a final surge of generosity and responsibility, but if there are primaries, it is obvious that we will have to take part.
We are abandoning the democracy of parliamentary representation, and this is going unnoticed even on the left.
