Vancouver teen says AI did not lead him onto dangerous mountain route
Bryce Gowryluk, a 16-year-old from Vancouver, was rescued from a steep rock face on Crown Mountain in British Columbia.
He had set out from Grouse Mountain for a hike that usually takes about eight hours.
He says he planned the trip using Google Maps and AllTrails, and checked some terrain information with Claude, an AI chatbot.
Gowryluk says he mainly used Claude to help make a packing list and accidentally turned onto the Widowmaker route.
That route is a difficult climb requiring equipment such as ropes, and he realized he could not safely climb down.
He reached a ledge and called his mother, then rescuers used a helicopter and rope team to bring him to safety.
The rescue has raised concerns about relying on digital tools for wilderness navigation, and rescue officials say AI cannot replace careful planning, suitable equipment and map-and-compass skills.

People are really taking it out of context, because people think that I planned … or was coerced by the AI to go on the Widowmaker, which is not true
The main thing is: do not blindly rely on AI as a route planning tool. It can never substitute …
I knew that fear would just lead me to panic, and panic would lead me to my death.
There’s definitely a trend towards using electronic applications as opposed to map and compass skills. But is really no substitute for the good map and compass training and education.
Gowryluk says he began planning an intended eight-hour hike from Grouse Mountain to Crown Mountain and back.
He rode a gondola to the top of Grouse Mountain and set out toward Crown Mountain.
