Meloni calls for global governance of artificial intelligence

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke at an Assolombarda business meeting in Milan.

She said artificial intelligence is changing daily life and could transform industrial production.

Meloni called for urgent global governance of AI, saying the issue needs to be addressed internationally.

She also pointed to “physical AI,” in which AI is used in machines, robots and production lines.

Her government is working on a tax measure to encourage investment in software used through cloud contracts, with the aim of including it in the budget law.

Meloni said Italy’s economy is holding up, but growth remains weak; she described projected growth of 1% in 2026 as encouraging but insufficient.

She also said the state should be an ally of industry, rather than treating it as a target for taxation.
