South Korea rights watchdog withdraws recommendation on Yoon's defense rights

South Korea's National Human Rights Commission voted to withdraw an earlier recommendation about former President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment trial.

The recommendation called for Yoon's right to defend himself before the Constitutional Court to be guaranteed.

The commission also approved a public apology for issuing it.

Its chair, Ahn Chang-ho, abstained from the vote.

Ahn was appointed by Yoon.

The commission adopted the recommendation in February 2025, after Yoon was impeached over his short-lived declaration of martial law on Dec.

3, 2024.

The recommendation drew criticism amid calls from Yoon's supporters for him to receive a fair trial.
