South Korean government wins case to recover 2.7 billion won from collaborator’s descendants

A South Korean court has ruled in favor of the government in a case involving assets linked to Shin Woo-sun.

He served as a vice councilor in the Japanese colonial government during Japan’s rule of Korea from 1910 to 1945 and received honorary medals from Japan’s government at the time.

The government is seeking land and money from its sale worth a combined 2.7 billion won.

The court said the state can reclaim proceeds from collaborators’ assets even when those assets were transferred to other people before a 2005 law took effect.

The law provided for pro-Japanese collaborators’ property to be returned to the state.

The ruling could allow the government to recover assets transferred before that law was enacted.

The court ordered the return of the proceeds and transfer of the land, though no further steps were given.
