Volkswagen deliveries fall 14.3% as sales in China keep declining
Volkswagen delivered 1.89 million vehicles worldwide from July to September, 14.3% fewer than in the same period a year earlier.
The decline was sharper than in the previous two quarters.
China was a major factor: deliveries there fell 38.5% to just under 406,000 vehicles.
Volkswagen faces a shrinking overall market, heavy price pressure and growing competition from Chinese manufacturers.
Sales growth in Europe and South America did not make up for the drop in China, while deliveries also fell at the Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche brands.
In Europe, demand for electric cars offered some relief, with nearly 150,000 orders for four upcoming models and electric vehicles making up about 40% of the order backlog.
Volkswagen said its locally developed electric models were beginning to have an effect in China, where deliveries of electrified vehicles rose about 30% year on year in the quarter.
Volkswagen delivered 1.89 million vehicles worldwide in the third quarter, down 14.3 percent from a year earlier.
Deliveries in China fell 38.5 percent in the quarter to nearly 406,000 vehicles.
For the first nine months of the year, Volkswagen deliveries reached just over 6 million, down 9.0 percent.
Growth in Europe and South America was not enough to offset the decline, especially in China.
Volkswagen said the Chinese market faces falling demand, strong price pressure and growing competition from domestic manufacturers.
