UK water companies earn over £340m from industrial wastewater

Businesses can pay water companies to send wastewater to sewage treatment plants.

An investigation found the system has no independent regulator or central register, and that many plants cannot remove industrial chemicals.

Some pollutants may end up in rivers, seas or farmland.
