GranTerre buys British cheese and meat distributor Pimpernel Wharf

Italian food group GranTerre has bought all of Pimpernel Wharf, a British company that sells and distributes cheese and cured meats.

Pimpernel Wharf is based in Reigate, Surrey, south of London, and was founded by the Stuart family in the 1960s.

It has annual revenue of about £16.9 million and sells to retailers, food manufacturers and food-service businesses.

The deal strengthens GranTerre's presence in the UK, one of the main export markets for Italian cheese and cured meats.

GranTerre says the acquisition completes the first phase of its plan to build a direct presence in key export markets, including the United States, France, Germany, Spain and Switzerland.

The company aims to work more closely with customers and better understand local demand through its own commercial network.

GranTerre says Pimpernel Wharf will also provide a stronger international platform for developing sales of both cheese and cured meats.
