Study links GLP-1 drug use with more reported nail problems
Researchers compared 575 people taking GLP-1 medicines with 1,329 people who had obesity and/or type 2 diabetes but had never taken them.
Participants came from France, the United States, Brazil and Mexico.
Nail detachment was reported by 39% of medicine users and 9% of nonusers, while discoloration affected 46% and 17%, respectively.
Overall, 66% of users reported at least one nail problem, compared with 53% of nonusers.
The researchers found that weight loss alone did not explain the differences, although existing skin conditions and nutritional deficiencies reduced some gaps.
The study shows an association, not that the medicines caused nail problems; about half of users said they had nail problems before treatment.
The findings were presented at the 2026 European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Congress, and the researchers said more investigation is needed.
A multinational study found that people taking GLP-1 medications reported more nail problems than people who had never used the drugs.
Nail detachment was reported by 39% of GLP-1 users and 9% of nonusers.
Overall, 66% of users reported at least one nail disorder, compared with 53% of the control group.
Researchers said weight loss did not fully account for the differences, but the findings do not prove the medications cause nail problems.
The findings were presented at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Congress 2026.

What people are saying
Our findings show a clear association, but they also underline an important point: not everything that happens during GLP-1 treatment is necessarily caused by the treatment itself.
