UN extends Darfur arms embargo but rejects expansion across Sudan

The UN Security Council extended its arms embargo on Sudan’s Darfur region until December 11.

The 15-member council agreed unanimously to keep the current restrictions in place while members continue negotiations.

The United States wanted the embargo expanded to cover all of Sudan, but Russia and China opposed the proposal, along with several other council members.

The existing sanctions, first imposed in 2005, include an arms embargo in Darfur, travel bans and asset freezes for designated people and groups.

Sudan’s war began in April 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, and has caused widespread deaths, displacement and famine.

The US says weapons supplies fuel the fighting and wants broader restrictions, while opponents want sanctions to remain limited to Darfur.

The council also extended the mandate of the experts who monitor the sanctions until January 11, 2027.
