University degrees in Russia to last four to six years under new model

Russia’s Education Minister Valery Falkov says university courses under a new model will last four, five or six years.

The length will depend on how complex the subject is.

Medicine, teaching and engineering will take longer than tourism studies, he said.

Master’s programs will last between one and three years.

The model has three levels: basic higher education, specialized higher education and postgraduate study.

A pilot began in 2023, and in January 2026 President Vladimir Putin extended it to 2030 and added more universities.

The change means students’ time at university will vary more by field.
