Andrew Schulz plays Dan Hibiki in the new Street Fighter adaptation

Andrew Schulz is playing Dan Hibiki in a new film adaptation of Capcom’s Street Fighter game franchise.

Schulz is an American stand-up comedian, actor and podcaster, and he was unfamiliar with Dan before producer Cale Boyter approached him about the role.

Dan is a brash, overconfident character whose skills fall short of his self-belief.

The character was created to poke fun at a rival video game franchise, making him an intentionally comic choice in a competitive game.

Schulz says Dan’s appeal is that he remains optimistic despite his shortcomings.

The Street Fighter series began in arcades in 1987 and helped define the fighting-game genre.

Schulz says his own history with the games, including playing them as a child in Manhattan, helped connect him to the role.
