Withdrawals open a route for Swiatek at the Wuhan Open

Iga Swiatek is competing at the Wuhan Open, a WTA 1000 tournament in China, after a dip in form since September.

She won the Canadian Open in the summer but then lost to Qinwen Zheng and Elise Mertens at the China Open.

Zheng, Mirra Andreeva, Linda Noskova, Oleksandra Oliynkova and Anna Kalinskaya are listed as withdrawals from Wuhan.

The changes allowed five players to enter the draw as lucky losers, with Lanlana Tararudee, Magdalena Frech and Ashlyn Krueger placed in Swiatek’s section.

Tararudee and Frech have already reached the second round, and Swiatek could face Frech next.

If Swiatek reaches the quarter-finals, she is expected to meet Aryna Sabalenka, who has won four major singles titles.

Swiatek has won eight of their 13 meetings, but lost their last two tour matches.
