Boston play tells fugitive Katherine Power’s story alongside victim’s daughter

A new play in Cambridge, Massachusetts, gives space to two perspectives on a 1970 robbery: those of fugitive Katherine Power and Clare Schroeder, whose father, a police officer, was killed.

The Getaway Driver opens at Central Square Theater on 29 October.

Power was the getaway driver when a group robbed a Boston bank in 1970 after stealing weapons from a National Guard armoury.

During the robbery, one of the group shot the officer, and Power learned of the shooting over the radio.

She spent 23 years on the run from the FBI, from 1970 until 1993.

The play was written by Charlie Thurston and Deborah Salem Smith using testimony from both women.

It aims to give equal weight to their stories, including the Schroeder family’s perspective, which has often been missing from accounts of the case.

The production was also inspired by student arrests in spring 2024, following protests after the 7 October 2023 Hamas attacks in Israel.
