Former Indonesian Army Commander Faces 10-Year Sentence in Land Case

Prosecutors have asked for a 10-year prison sentence for Widi Prasetijono, a former commander of Indonesia’s IV/Diponegoro military region.

They also seek his dismissal from military service, a 500 million rupiah fine and repayment of 21.05 billion rupiah.

The case concerns the sale of 716.2 hectares of land in Cilacap, Central Java, to a company owned by the local government for about 237.94 billion rupiah.

Prosecutors say the land was a state asset and that Widi and three other defendants took part in its sale; Widi has denied that state land was sold.

The other defendants are former military officers Wisnu Kurniawan and Sjaiful Nursaid, and former company director Suko Madyo Susilo; prosecutors seek prison terms of four, six and three years for them, respectively.

The sentences are prosecutors’ requests, not court verdicts, and the case is being heard by a military court in Jakarta.

The hearing is scheduled to continue on November 2, when the defendants are due to present their responses.
