Kubicki ties his future and the FDP’s to 2027 state elections
FDP leader Wolfgang Kubicki says he will quit if his party fails to return to the state parliaments of North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein in 2027.
He also warned that the FDP could be finished if it loses both contests.
The elections are scheduled for 18 April in Schleswig-Holstein and 25 April in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The party recently won just 2.6% in Saxony-Anhalt and is now represented in state parliaments only in those two states, Hesse and Bremen.
Kubicki had sounded more confident after the Saxony-Anhalt result, saying he did not expect the FDP to disappear from politics under his leadership.
The party will hold an extraordinary online convention on Sunday to approve reforms and changes to its rules aimed at consolidating its finances.
The FDP plans to begin its 2027 election year with its traditional Three Kings meeting in Stuttgart.
