Italy sets December 21 auction for electricity capacity in 2028

Terna will hold Italy’s 2028 capacity auction on December 21.

The auction is part of a system designed to ensure enough electricity capacity is available when demand is high.

Power producers can compete to supply capacity, while demand-response units and resources from other countries can also take part under specific rules.

Successful bidders must offer their selected capacity in electricity and related service markets and receive a fixed annual payment from Terna.

Applications can be submitted until November 3.

The updated rules raise availability factors for batteries and solar power; wind and run-of-river hydro factors stay unchanged.

These factors estimate how much of a resource’s rated power can be counted on during peak demand, and the changes reflect growth in authorized storage capacity.
