Youth group plans protest at Globo over presidential debate fact-checking

Levante Popular da Juventude plans a peaceful protest outside TV Globo’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday.

The group wants real-time fact-checking during Friday’s debate between Flávio Bolsonaro and Lula.

The demand follows a debate on TV Band on Sunday that was marked by arguments between the candidates.

Protesters say they want Flávio’s statements challenged if they are distorted.

They argue that Globo’s wide reach gives it a responsibility to support truthful political debate.

Globo is unlikely to add live fact-checking, saying it is not part of the rules agreed to by both campaigns.

A broadcaster as large as Globo, with enormous reach and the ability to influence electoral behavior, participation in political debate and the formation of public opinion, cannot fail to guarantee the basics of journalism: a commitment to truth and to the country's democracy.
