Coalition of ethnic groups fights Ethiopia’s federal government

Ethiopia is again at war, with a coalition of ethnic groups fighting the federal government.

Opponents accuse Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of seeking too much power.

Rebels from Tigray in the north are also fighting, and they face the same accusation.

Several rival groups are now involved in the conflict.

Ethiopia endured about 15 years of war from the mid-1970s, with millions of deaths and famine; the country became calmer in the 1990s, when its population doubled and the economy grew strongly.

Neighboring countries are also involved, extending the conflict beyond Ethiopia.
