Almudena Cid backs fairer retirement recognition for athletes

Former Spanish gymnast Almudena Cid has spoken about life after elite sport in a preview of a television programme due to air on laSexta on Sunday.

She competed at four Olympic Games, reaching the final each time, and won eight Spanish national titles.

After retiring in 2008, she developed serious hip problems and later received a four-part hip replacement.

Cid says athletes can face a crisis of identity when they retire, and often receive no follow-up for health problems linked to their careers.

She and Lola Fernández Ochoa launched Jubilación Justa to recognise athletes’ years of work for pension contributions.

The initiative’s draft royal decree began public consultation in March, according to the account.

Its next steps are not stated.
