Fuel costs deepen food aid pressures in the United States

Rising fuel and food prices are deepening hardship for low-income people in the United States.

In Detroit, 65-year-old Tonya King received a food box meant to feed her family of six for two weeks.

She says she must choose between medicine for seizures and medicine for diabetes.

Higher petrol prices can also make it harder for people to reach food distribution sites, while costlier diesel makes deliveries more expensive.

Focus: Hope now sends 1,300 food boxes a month to low-income older people, up from 800 at the start of the year.

A California food bank’s diesel spending rose 61% from July to September compared with a year earlier, taking money that could have paid for about 250,000 meals.

Higher costs are squeezing both food aid and the groups that provide it, while rising needs and reduced government food assistance add to pressure on households.
