US sanctions 10 people and a North Korean-linked entity over IT worker schemes
The United States sanctioned 10 people and one entity accused of helping North Korean IT workers get jobs under false identities.
The Treasury Department says the scheme placed workers at legitimate businesses in the US and other countries.
It says North Korea took most of their wages to help fund its weapons programs.
Treasury also alleges the workers stole sensitive information and extorted companies, while networks used cryptocurrency to move money.
The designated entity, the First Financial and Technical Development Center, is North Korean-controlled and operates in Russia.
The sanctions block covered assets in the US and generally bar US people from doing business with those designated.
The move adds to earlier US action against similar networks, and the sanctions remain in effect unless OFAC authorizes transactions.
