Mexico’s PAN warns of protests over the next head of the electoral authority
Mexico’s opposition PAN party warned it could stage protests if the ruling Morena party tries to place a government ally at the head of the national electoral authority, the INE.
The warning concerns the selection of a new president after Guadalupe Taddei’s departure opens a transition at the institution.
The PAN says the appointment should be handled through a citizen-led, impartial process rather than controlled by political parties.
Its lawmakers have submitted proposals for the committee that will assess candidates, including that its members have had no party or government ties in the previous eight years.
The party also wants universities, professional groups and civil society organizations to put forward candidates for that committee.
The appointment will be decided by Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies, and the PAN says the process must protect the INE’s independence ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party has also asked the INE to review contracts and appointments made during Taddei’s administration.
Mexico’s National Action Party, or PAN, warned on November 4 that it would stage protests if Morena tried to install a candidate aligned with the government as head of the National Electoral Institute.
PAN leader Jorge Romero Herrera called for the appointment to be made through a citizen-led, non-partisan and impartial process.
The post is becoming vacant with the departure of Guadalupe Taddei, and the next appointment is ahead of Mexico’s 2027 elections.
PAN said it submitted eight proposals to the Chamber of Deputies’ political coordination board to promote transparency and independence in the selection process.
The party also asked for a review of contracts and appointments made during Taddei’s administration.

What people are saying
At PAN, at this point, women and men are ready to go crazy. We’ll close this street, take the podium, take the horseshoe here at the INE, and we will not allow a puppet to be imposed on the INE.
We want a free INE. An INE without Morena, without PAN, without PRI, without Verde, without PT, without MC. We want a free INE.
