Julia Scheib opens the ski season in Sölden as a top contender
Austrian skier Julia Scheib returns to Sölden for the opening giant slalom of the new World Cup season, a year after winning her first World Cup race there.
Last season, the 28-year-old also won the giant slalom's small Crystal Globe, awarded to the season's best skier in that discipline.
She finished the season with five World Cup wins, and says she will carry her confidence into the new campaign.
Scheib starts from the second position, behind New Zealand's Alice Robinson, in Saturday's race.
She says she feels relaxed and wants to ski two runs she can be proud of, rather than focus on being the favourite.
This season she will also compete in super-G, while she says downhill racing is not part of her plans yet.
The World Championships in Crans-Montana are the season's main highlight, scheduled for 1 to 14 February.
