Chelsea beat Liverpool on penalties as Henderson returns to Anfield

Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties in a Carabao Cup last-16 tie at Anfield on Wednesday.

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson played the full 90 minutes for Chelsea, and scored his penalty in the shootout.

The 36-year-old spent 12 years at Liverpool, made 492 appearances and won eight trophies before leaving in 2023.

Liverpool supporters booed Henderson when he touched the ball, despite the long spell he had spent at the club.

He smiled at the crowd as he approached the penalty spot, then passed the ball to Morgan Rogers, who took Chelsea’s first-half penalty.

Henderson also argued with former team-mate Virgil van Dijk during the match, but later appeared to applaud the fans and joked with him.

Liverpool advanced after winning the shootout, while Henderson’s Chelsea return to Anfield ended in defeat.
