Economist warns Spain’s non-homeowners face housing insecurity

Economist Santiago Niño Becerra says non-homeowners in Spain are vulnerable amid the country’s housing problems.

He made the comments in an interview on the Tengo un plan podcast.

He links today’s pressures to housing policies from the 1980s and early 1990s, including the Boyer Law, which he says weakened protections for renters and encouraged home buying.

Becerra says limited housing supply can make available homes expensive.

He says people who lose their jobs or divorce may have to move back in with their parents.

Housing is a major concern ahead of Spain’s November 29 snap election, and voters are looking for changes to the property market.

The report says no quick solution or near-term shift is expected.
