Mexico’s budget committee approves 6 billion-peso cut to electoral institute
Mexico’s budget committee approved a 2027 spending plan with total spending of about 10.6 trillion pesos.
The plan cuts 6 billion pesos from the National Electoral Institute (INE), which oversees elections.
The committee approved an initial 5-billion-peso reduction, with funds directed to education, the environment, missing-person searches and civil aviation security; three later amendments cut another 1 billion pesos.
Those additional funds go to early education, a women’s welfare program and tourism promotion.
The committee also approved changes to make budget allocations for judicial bodies easier to identify and track.
The plan now faces further committee debate before a vote in the full Chamber of Deputies, scheduled for Monday.
One lawmaker said the INE cut would not put its work or the 2026-27 concurrent elections at risk.

The latest reductions include 618 million pesos for an early education program, about 362 million pesos for a women’s welfare program and 20 million pesos for tourism.

What people are saying
The 5 billion-peso cut to the INE budget does not put its functions or the concurrent 2026–2027 electoral process at risk.
This proposal seeks to strengthen the operation of the Child Development Centers and other early education services, as well as expand opportunities for care for girls and boys, particularly in regions with the greatest needs.
Many women still face labor inequalities, insecurity, barriers to accessing services, and a disproportionate burden of care work.
