Ukraine’s ambassador urges Mexico to join child-return coalition
Ukraine’s ambassador to Mexico is urging Mexico to join an international coalition focused on returning Ukrainian children taken from their homes during the war.
The appeal follows Mexico’s participation in a conference in Toronto in late September on returning Ukrainian children, detained civilians and prisoners of war.
Honduras became the coalition’s 52nd member at the conference and its fifth member from Latin America, after Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and Panama.
The coalition is a diplomatic and humanitarian network, not a political or military alliance, and works to locate, protect and return children.
The ambassador says 2,689 children have returned to their families, while more than 20,000 cases of children deported or forcibly transferred have been documented.
The ambassador also cites an OSCE estimate that more than 1.5 million children in occupied territories face practices that weaken family ties, language and identity.
Mexico has not yet joined, and the ambassador argues that membership could support diplomatic efforts to arrange safe returns.
