International cartoon biennial opens in Mexico City

The first Tlatelolco International Cartoon Biennial opened in Mexico City on Saturday at the Tlatelolco University Cultural Centre.

More than 200 cartoonists from 50 countries took part, with over 500 entries submitted to the competition.

Its theme is “A New World Order,” reflecting changes and challenges around the world.

The cartoons address political conflicts, migration, environmental crises and artificial intelligence, among other subjects.

Organizers say the biennial aims to give cartoonists a space to share their work and ideas.

They also say cartoons can defend freedom of expression, especially when artists face pressure or danger for criticizing society and politics.

Hamid Ghalijari of Iran and Vladimir Kazanevsky of Ukraine were named among the top winners, and the exhibition will remain open until January 30, 2027.
