Gundam Director Says AI Is Making Anime Proposals Harder to Assess

Kenji Kamiyama says AI is being used to write anime proposals and plots, raising concerns about how creative work is made.

Kamiyama is directing the upcoming series Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO and previously worked on Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

He told Mantan Web that AI-written scripts can still be spotted, but proposals are becoming almost impossible to distinguish from human work.

AI has prompted debate in the anime industry, with some seeing it as a tool to ease workloads and others viewing it as a threat to artists.

Kamiyama says AI can be useful, but is only an information-gathering machine and should not be trusted completely.

He says he does not use AI in production and is developing the Gundam series through his usual creative process.

Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is scheduled to premiere in April 2027.

At the script level, you can tell if it's AI-generated, but at the proposal level it's becoming impossible to tell. I guess that's how far AI has advanced

But, it's currently nothing more than an information-gathering machine. It's still difficult to use, and I think it's better not to trust it too much ... I don't use it in production either.

What I find scary these days is that I've heard stories of clients submitting proposals and plots written by AI
