Ottawa to invest $430 million in skilled trades training
Ottawa plans to invest in training new skilled trades workers through funding for equipment, training centres and recruitment.
The headline announcement gives the amount as $430 million, while another account says it will be more than $350 million.
The funding is intended to help unions, colleges and other organizations train workers in trades with Red Seal certification, a nationally recognized credential.
The federal government aims to recruit and train 80,000 to 100,000 new workers by 2030-31.
The push responds to a reported shortfall of more than 20,000 skilled trades workers a year.
The money is expected to support equipment purchases, expanded training centres and new ways to recruit and keep apprentices.
The announcement is planned for Metcalfe, Ontario, but further details on some related apprentice supports have not yet been released.
Ottawa is set to invest in training skilled trades workers, with CTV News reporting a planned $430 million investment.
CBC reported before the announcement that the funding would exceed $350 million and support training infrastructure, equipment and recruitment.
The funding is intended to help recruit, train and hire 80,000 to 100,000 new Red Seal-certified workers by 2030-31.
