Prabowo Defends Broad Coalition and Orders Action on Forest Fires

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto addressed his cabinet in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 21, praising its work during his first two years in office.

He said his broad political coalition aims to unite competing forces to improve people’s lives, despite criticism that a large cabinet may be inefficient.

Prabowo said Indonesia faces global conflicts and trade disputes, and argued that food, currency and trade can be used as strategic weapons.

He also said foreign powers had interfered in past Indonesian rebellions, though he said the country had remained resilient.

On forest and land fires, Prabowo said some were caused by people rather than natural events and called them a serious threat to public health.

He ordered police and intelligence officials to investigate companies and others suspected of responsibility.

He said the government would revoke permits for companies proven to have broken rules, but gave no timeline.
